Music is encoded in multi-instrumentalist and composer Cochemea Gastelum’s DNA, coming from a long lineage of musicians. Over a distinguished 25-year career, the California native of Yaqui ancestry has forged a unique path. While widely recognized for his long tenure with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Cochemea has collaborated with a staggering array of heavyweights, including Amy Winehouse, Run The Jewels, and Jon Batiste.Through his solo work on Daptone Records, Cochemea explores ancestral memory. His latest album, Vol. 3: Ancestros Futuros, completes a powerful trilogy that weaves past, present, and future into a fluid sonic tapestry. Dreams play a vital role in his process; he shapes these subconscious visitations into actual 'dream scores' that ground his compositions. Recorded entirely live to analog tape with a powerhouse percussion octet, Cochemea coaxes expressive, intimate depths from his saxophone and flute, creating a deeply moving, rhythmic ritual.
