Shane Parish is a guitarist, composer, improviser and interpreter. He is a renowned finger-style soloist, founder of the avant-rock band Ahleuchatistas, and a player in the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet. He just released a new album AUTECHRE GUITAR on Palilalia.
Shane has been on board the Stubnitz multiple times both as solo artist and part of Ahleuchatistas. May 17th will mark his return after 15 years.
The latest record shouldn’t, strictly speaking, be possible at all. It’s not just that Autechre’s music is electronic and Shane Parish’s is acoustic. It’s not just that Autechre come from electro and techno, while Shane’s solo guitar music is rooted in jazz, folk, and the blues. Those borders, between mediums and genres, are as porous as you want them to be.
Parish’s 2024 album, “REPERTOIRE” (Palilalia Records), is a collection of solo acoustic finger-style arrangements of works by musical giants in jazz, electronica, avant-garde classical, and more. He transcribed, arranged, and performed songs by Alice Coltrane, John Cage, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, John Cage, and among others - “Imagine John Fahey going through your record collection and arranging the best bits and you’ll get an idea” (Boomkat). In 2025, he released "SOLO AT CAFE OTO" on his own label Red Eft Records. It is a live album of solo electric guitar explorations of English and American folk ballads, recorded in London in 2023.
"Solo at Cafe OTO pulls off a rare feat for a live record: it doesn’t just make you feel like you were there, but it makes you want to be there the next time it happens." --Roz Milner, DUSTED
